Dear Michigan Driver’s License Lawyer at Canu Torrice Law:

I have had some suspended licenses in Michigan over the past 2 years for unpaid speeding tickets but I always paid them just sometimes late and when I was pulled over a couple times my Michigan license was suspended for not paying my traffic tickets.

I just got another DWLS because I have an unpaid speeding ticket in Sterling Heights, Michgan. I know I need an attorney because last time i went without a lawyer for a DWLS charge the judge in Rochester Hills almost threw me in jail and I had all types of probation. My question is the more DWLS charges I get on my michgan driver’s license will that mean the secretary of state will suspend my license longer?

Thanks for your help. I just need my Michigan license to driver to school at Macomb Community College and my job, and I need an attorney to help me!

The Michigan criminal defense and driver’s license attorneys at Canu Torrice Law can help save your Michigan driver’s license and keep you out of jail for your driving while license suspended charge.

In your situation it does not seem like the actual charge (or conviction) of Driving While License Suspensed (or DWLS) in Michigan will result in an additional suspension of your Michigan driver’s license. If, for example, you were driving while your license was revoked due to multiple drunk driving convictions, and then you were subsequently convicted of DWLS (or even a minor traffic ticket), you would be facing an “additional like” suspension of your driver’s license in Michigan, which means your Michigan driver’s license would be suspended for an additional period of time equal to the term of your current suspension/revocation of your Michigan driver’s license. For example, if you were driving while your license was suspended or revoked for a period of 1 year because you had 2 drunk driving/OWI/OWVI convictions within the last 7 years, than any sort of traffic ticket or DWLS/DWLR conviction on your Michgan driving record would result in an additional 1 year suspension/revocation period before your would be eligible to petition the Michigan Secretary of State to reinstate your diving privledges.

However, regardless of the consequences on your Michigan driver’s license, driving while license suspended or revoked (DWLS/DWLR) charges in Michigan are criminal offenses and have very serious consequences, most significantly an instant $1,000.00 fine from the Secretary of State, in addition to all your court fines and costs. There is also the possibility of going to jail as DWLS/DWLR is a 93 day misdemeanor offense in Michigan. Further, if you have ANY prior DWLS/DWLR convictions in Michigan, and it seems like you do in your case, then you will face enhanced penalties as a 2nd offender, and can face up to 1 year in jail! Depending on the court your in this could be very troublesome. If you end up in the Rochester Hills or Bloomfield Hills District Courts in Michigan as a multiple DWLS offender, be prepared to do jail time unless you hire the right Michigan criminal defense lawyer.
